Data Centers Can Learn Sustainability From The Cloud

Sustainable data centres are also called green data centres that are the facilities that utilize high energy-efficient technologies to store an organization’s data on the cloud. These systems are designed in such a way that they do not contain obsolete technologies and systems like inactive and underused services. Hence, they have the efficiency of working on more efficient and modern technologies. Within the expansion of the use on the internet, power consumption in these data centres has increased in recent years, resulting in environmental hinges and an increase in the costs and public awareness. Hence, companies are demanded and forced to switch to better solutions like the green policy to create sustainable data centres.

Sustainable

That said, most of the proposed data centres today are in need of improvement and learn sustainability from cloud computing technologies. For example, Finland announced lower taxes on energy consumption for the companies that have adopted the green policy for data centres. One critical aspect of it is shifting the data centres to colder regions with cooler climatic conditions throughout the year as they do not require power for cooling the over-headed machines.

Problem statement

The root cause of problems from the data centres is due to the overconsumption of power and resources to maintain massive amounts of data. A closer look at the issue shows that the data does not operate in energy-efficient ways, demanding for excessive network storage space and memory space in their core services. In other words, they’re simply engineered in inefficient ways, leading to overconsumption of the available resources. Although developers cannot dig into the code and look for changes, other alternative methods can be followed.

  • Using of DevOps tools and toolchain which would help in the testing of the security, performance and the stability of the entire system. If the code is efficient, then the process should continue, else it should bounce back the code to reframe the aspects in them.
  • Tenant management used in cloud technologies that reduce the consumption of resources. This will lead to lesser power consumption, for monitoring and optimizing the use and application of resources. The use of memory optimization and data duplication from the sustainability of cloud technologies can reduce power consumption from 60% to 40%.

The use of cloud technology for a greener alternative

Green

Cloud computing and sustainability have gained importance over recent years from the way the data is optimized and stored in the cloud. The sustainability provided by these cloud computing technologies also reduces the carbon footprint on their servers, which ought to be employed by the data centres. For this reason, the cloud computing service providers are also constantly putting in effort and investment to not only uses the new computing power by even Software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications for the customers. Enabling cloud computing services and applying them to the data centres not only enhances sustainability but also reduces power consumption in a carbon footprint by enabling smart grids, optimized logistics and also dematerialization.
